A fresh start, if fate would let me
The side of the plane was opening and Thorn, hidden at the back in a pile of bags and suitcases, jolted awake, the book she had been reading still resting open on her chest. Hopefully she’d gotten the right plane and it hadn’t become delayed, because if it wasn’t dark out she was completely screwed. Most vampire’s spoke about how, since they’d been alive so long, a day was really nothing, but Thorn couldn’t agree. She was impatient, that’s why she was risking the trip here on a plane, rather than taking something safer such as a boat. As the bags began to be unloaded she quietly stood, haling her bag up onto her shoulder and taking the book in her hand. Waiting for an opportunity when the men unloading the luggage seemed to have moved she jumped out from the plane and had taken a few steps when she heard someone behind her. “Hey you” The two of them called walking closer, causing her to curse quietly. She stood still, waiting for them both to get close enough before swigging round, letting the bag make contact with both their faces, knocking them to the floor. “Sorry lads, steal toed boots” she explained before hurrying off quickly.
Throwing her bag over and placing the book in her pocket she climbed the fence out of the airport then brushed her hands off on her jacket before reaching into one of the other pockets. Taking out a small metal flask she drank from it before placing it back. Being self destructive wasn’t particularly easy for someone was already dead, things like getting drunk weren’t as easy, but considering the blood the vampire was drinking had been mixed in with alcohol for quite a while now it was keeping her in a slight daze. Just enough to stop her thinking about things too intensely, otherwise she might have turned back around and ended up in London again. That defiantly wasn’t an option, she had already screwed things up for two other people quite a lot, hanging round would only cause something else no doubt.
Looking around Thorn saw attention had been brought to the man she had knocked out and put her bag back over her shoulder, best to get out of here now then have a modern version of the torch wielding villagers. Beginning to walk she pulled her hood up as the rain began to fall, it soon picked up tremendously.
Having nowhere to stay Thorn would find herself a crypt for the night, she couldn‘t stand hotels, it would probably take her a while to get her own place, it wasn’t particularly easy when you can’t go out through the day. Over the last few years of comfortable living in London she wasn’t used to living without electric and a shower anymore. By the time she’d found a church she was soaked to the skin, the front part of her hair the hood had not protected now stuck to her forehead. She glanced to the graveyard round back for a moment before staring up at the church itself. She’d always loved the look of them, even if she never liked church itself, though now being inside wasn’t exactly a comfortable thing with all the crosses, but she could stand it for a while. Biting her lip for a moment she stepped inside, keeping her head low so the hood shielded her eyes as she watched the floor. Her footsteps echoed and she made her way down towards the front of the building, still not raising her gaze just yet.

Micky simply couldn’t stay. Even though Thorn had left, it was still as if she was still there. Every time Micky turned a street, she thought she saw Thorn looking at her, but it was never the case. The vampire didn’t even bother to say that she was leaving a couple months ago. Willow had apparently been able to use her magic to detect that the vampire was gone, but for an entire month she didn’t say anything. At first, Micky just thought it was the typical thing: she could go for weeks without seeing Thorn and then in one week they would see each other all of the time – it had become a pattern between them. But this time she was really gone. Micky had spent that time trying, just trying, to fix things with Willow. But there was a rift between them that could not be put back together again. Completely unable to handle the situation, Micky had gotten on a direct flight to Cleveland two weeks ago. It seemed like the only place that would have enough vampires to keep her occupied. Eventually she would be fine… on her own.
The Council building had been easy enough to find since she was aware of its existence. She had stopped by it on her first day in the city, just to see what it was like. There was absolutely no way that she would get involved with it, albeit if their paths crossed somewhere down the line. It would just be a reminder of Willow, who she needed to stop thinking about. At least she had said goodbye. And although the redheaded witch had cried, Micky did not let herself shed a tear until after she had already boarded the plane. But she would never allow the witch to permeate her mind again. It was over long before she left, and she needed to move on from it, which was exactly what she began to do. She found herself a place to stay, in a warehouse with a blind slayer who had separated from the Council. It was perfect: there was room to train and a partner to spar with. She even had a daytime job serving food at Olympia Diner down the street.
But every now and then, particularly when the hunt was slow and the night was calm, thoughts of London would come back to her. There was nothing she could do about it but hope they completely went away over time. Most of the time when this happened, she would sit on the roof of the warehouse, but on this particular night, Jordin was up there and was best not bothered. So Micky took a walk in the rain, which she didn’t mind. She had always loved the rain and found it comforting, particularly when she was in a not-so-great mood. She wasn’t prepared to hunt, although she had a stake on her just in case. So, when she passed by the graveyard in the back of the church, she didn’t really pay attention to what was going on around her. Instead, she ducked inside the church and took solace there. It wasn’t that she was religious – she didn’t even believe in god – but she found the place calming. She came to sit on one of the benches and just looked up at the ceiling.
When she heard the opening of the door, she looked up and instinctively grabbed her stake. At first she couldn’t tell who the person was, as her face was shielded by a hood. But as the girl walked by the row Micky sat in, she saw the face completely clearly. Thorn. This was the last place in the world that she had ever expected to see the vampire, and on top of that, she had given up hope on that ever occurring. But here she was, walking by her. Micky’s head was swimming with confusion. Just as Thorn had passed by, just as she was a few steps ahead of Micky, she decided to speak up. Thorn would see her sooner or later; it was just decidedly better to bring it out in the open. “Thorn…” She couldn’t really say anything else. What could she say? Hi, glad to see you again? No, nothing would suit other than the name, which alone seemed to describe the entire situation.

This wasn’t so bad, not with her hood up at least, she was yet to actually look at anything directly however, the only thing she could really see apart from the floor the flicker of candles from the corner of her eye. Already she could tell though that she might not have as much trouble as she expected in here, crosses needed to be backed up by faith to have much affect and from what she could tell there wasn’t much in the people who visited here. Thorn could hardly blame them, she’d seen a lot of evil in her time, been it too, and the only angel she’d met had been a vampire calling himself so. Moody one come to think of it, in the short time they’d been around each other. Finally raising her head, the candlelight hitting her face, Thorn stared in front of her, taking in the large cross at the front of the church, a slight frown coming to her face, as if she was having difficulty looking at it.
She was just contemplating taking some of the candles with her, to continue reading for a while, when the sound of her name seemed to cause her to stand at attention, her back straightening, her body becoming slightly more alert. After the months away, and the slight daze she’d been trying to keep her memory in, the voice wasn’t entirely recognisable though she knew it was familiar. Swallowing she turned her head to the side, away from the direction of the voice. Familiar wasn’t good for her and when she finally manage to match the voice back to Micky she had the urge to leave immediately. What kind of chance was it that they’d met up again here. It wasn’t chance at all. Still, she needed to say something. She’d been alone for months now, hardly spoke to anyone, her voice sounded different when she did and she knew it, she’d become quieter, almost choked., but silence wasn’t going to do in this situation. Or would it, she wondered what Micky would do if she just left. Would she let the encounter go or follow her?
Come to think of it how exactly did she feel about the vampire, she had after all come along and turned life upside down for both her and Willow, once before the human had tried to kill her, and would have succeeded if she really wanted to. She didn’t care what Micky had said to her about their relationship already being in trouble, Thorn saw herself as responsible for breaking it up, and then she hadn’t even stuck around. She’d ended their relationship, for nothing. Perhaps that was why Micky was here, had somehow found out where she was heading and followed her to put right the mistake she had made by letting her live. Thorn wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about that, she didn’t have a death wish of course, but over this time alone it had dawned on her she had eternity to live if she kept to herself, just nothing to do with it.
Moving forwards her steps across the stone floor echoed once more and she stopped at a row of candles, watching one flicker before dipping her fingertip into the wax and watching it harden almost instantly on her skin. The rainwater from her hair dripped, dying out the candle she had been concentrating on and finally she was brought back from her thoughts, remembering the reason she had been thinking about Micky in the first place was that she was here. Rounding she stood facing her in silhouette now the light was behind her, the hood still up shielding any light the candles could have still cast on her face. “Yes?” she ask finally, quiet, hoping the question asked everything for her. Why are you here, what happens next, where do we stand? Though she doubted she would be lucky enough to get the conversation over so quickly.

In asking her question, Micky was really looking for more than just an acknowledgement that she had mentioned Thorn’s name. If she had known what to say, she would have initially said it out in the open. The problem was that she had so much to say but couldn’t choose one strand of words over the other. Thorn’s answer had turned all the responsibility over to her, and she couldn’t exactly change that. And there was no way that she would admit that she wasn’t sure what to do in this situation, although her discomfort was more likely than not palpable enough so that Thorn would be able to sense it. Micky felt like she should have known Thorn wouldn’t have said the first words, that should would have left this up to her; she should have anticipated this. But how could she have? She didn’t even know that Thorn was in Cleveland! Let alone that they would have seen each other tonight. No, none of this could have been planned for.
Out of a sort of nervous habit, Micky’s eyes darted around in front of her. She took note of the large cross, of the candles, and of the doors leading to rooms in the back. Those, she decided, would have been the better place to rest. Thorn would have never seen her there… But it was too late to think about what she should have done. Maybe she should have never left London. No! She couldn’t let these thoughts into her head, especially now that the vampire was standing in the same building has her. Had Micky been facing any other direction, she would have looked for potential exits other than the main door, but there were none it her current line of vision and turning around would just have looked too strange for her to explain. She always did this in uncomfortable situations: find an exit just in case the situation became unbearable.
Realizing that she was silent for just too long, Micky decided to simply blurt out the next phrase that came to her mind, regardless of how potentially dangerous that may have been. “What are you doing here?” She was glad that it was what she thought of first, mainly because it was probably the simplest of her questions, especially given that she was bound to receive it as well in a sort of reciprocation. It would be the easiest one for her to answer, although that wasn’t saying much, because it wasn’t easy whatsoever. She wasn’t sure if she could truthfully tell Thorn that she left London because things were broken between her and Willow and she couldn’t stay around to fix them. She could, however, explain why she choose Cleveland rather than any place else, or on a more basic level, why she was at this specific church. Simple, right?

Scratching the wax off of her fingertip Thorn forced her body to relax, slumping down into a sit on the few steps at the front of the church. To be fair she probably needed quite a lot of rest, since for last few month after London she had simply been travelling around the rest of the UK, mostly on foot. Blood hadn’t been a recurring thing, butchers that would agree to give her it were hard to come by so she’d taken to draining farm animals when she came by them, no doubt starting another Chupacabra legend. She’d hitchhiked a little, when she could, though being in secluded places with unsuspected humans was only becoming harder with the little she had been feeding. Micky had nothing to worry about of course, even if she did give in she knew how much weaker she had become over her past few years with a diet of animal blood, she’d almost killed the vampire once before after all.
If they were back in London Thorn would find this silence between them strange, though with the time apart and her months of almost constant silence she had forgot how they had actually gotten along. Well, most of the time, usually when the whole undead thing didn’t get in the way. She guessed she’d have to answer the question though, leaving usually was something she would consider but for some reason she couldn’t do it this time. Pulling her hood down Thorn shook out her hair for a moment before it fell into her eyes as she began to pick at the worn out shoes she wore. “I heard this place had a hellmouth and since I couldn’t stay in London and I’m not exactly at my best right now it seemed the right place for me. They say it naturally makes us stronger, I kind of need that with my diet” She shrugged a little, eyes still not on Micky. “As for the church… I need a place to stay.”
Finally lifting her eyes she leaned backwards, supporting herself with her hands as she let her eyes meet Micky’s for the first time that night. They seemed to have dulled, almost a cloudy gray rather than blue. She still couldn’t help but to wonder why she was here, though from her reaction of seeing Thorn here she could rule out that she’d been followed. “I’m guessing from the question you aren’t here to kill me then. So how did you end up in this place? Seems like a Million to one that we’d end up in the same church… all these miles from London” Her voice still held slight suspicion but she tried not to let it show on her face.

Despite the uncomfortable nature of the situation, Micky couldn’t help but find the humor in Thorn’s words. She smiled without realizing initially, but almost just after she did so, she did realize it. “Sorry,” she said, shaking her head lightly as if she were shaking off the smile. “But seriously? You’re looking in a church for a place to stay?” It was basically the anti-stereotype, moving from graveyards to churches. Besides, the crosses would be an issue, but only if there was a slayer or some other hunter around. That wouldn’t be too big of a risk either, considering that most wouldn’t think to look in a church. The issue with slayers was that they were so cliché: look in graveyards, dark alleys, and so on. Granted new vampires were in graveyards, and slayers had begun to look in the less typical places, generalized streets, clubs, and any sort of hang out, but still it wasn’t enough. The Council wouldn’t ever tell them to check churches. It was the perfect hide out.
But Micky knew that she hadn’t answered the question posed to her, and that she didn’t really have a way of avoiding it, although she wasn’t sure if she wanted to or not. “But no I’m not here to kill you… There’s a Council here so I figured it’d be a decent place and I wasn’t really sure where else to go.” She was tired of being a drifter. Chicago, Boston, New York, London… she just needed somewhere to rest her head and Cleveland was her final chance to do so. However, now that Thorn happened to be there too, she wasn’t that sure. She didn’t mind being around Thorn, especially with the possibility that they could move past London and somehow reconnect. But if Thorn wanted her to leave, she would. Even if she didn’t explicitly say it and only hinted at it, Micky would leave. It was all up in the air.
She breathed a sigh of relief, perfectly content to just stop there with her explanation. Thorn didn’t need to know—at least not yet—the specifics of Micky’s leaving London. She didn’t need to know that the relationship between Micky and Willow had become so broken that it couldn’t be fixed and so she left. They weren’t on a sturdy enough ground for Micky to delve into that information, not to mention the tiny detail that she was… kinda, sorta… in love with Thorn. It was the one thing that she refused to bring up: she had told Thorn once and that was enough. They didn’t need to dwell on it whatsoever.

This all caused a big dilemma for her. Thorn wasn’t in the right state of body or mind to deal with moving around constantly at the moment, maybe when she could stand to feed from humans again. If ever. She’d got too close to them, and this was what had happened. She’d let herself start feeling again, rather than making it harder to do so by keeping a distanced. Because vampires could feel, just like humans, they just don’t like to, they stay away, or it makes it a whole lot harder to be evil. So now what did she do? She’d come here to try keep herself away from people, become the loner again so she could stop being caught up in shit. How was that going to work with Micky there, just knowing they were in the same place was going to make it hard to stay away. “Actually I was looking for some candles, but this place isn’t bad. Hardly makes me squirm at all” She gave a small smile, her voice steady as she spoke, hiding everything that was running through her mind as she looked over at Micky. She’d left a lot coming here, she was comfortable in London, but the situation had become too much for her and she’d left with only a few things, whatever fit in the two bags she had.
“Well we do always end up running into each other somewhere” she said “Though I didn’t expect it to happen this time” she admitted. She was going to leave the subject of their past behind, mostly because she didn’t want the questions to come her way also. She wasn’t going to ask Micky to leave this place, though she wasn’t sure yet if she would herself. For a while at least she’d stay put, maybe they wouldn’t always find each other like they seemed to in London. If things got weird for her again she’d just have to deal with finding somewhere else. Preferably with a hellmouth. They couldn’t be that hard to find surely.

“Me either,” she answered, smiling slightly. She had never anticipated seeing Thorn again; it was never a possibility in her mind. The world was so large that they seemed bound to end up in separate places, but here they were in the same room. Had Micky believed in fate (which she didn’t), she would have attributed this to that. Even now, as they talked to one another, it still seemed so unreal, almost like a dream. Granted if this was a dream, it certainly wouldn’t be playing out like this… With each minute, though, the situation was growing more and more complex. The easy question was out of the way, which only left room for even more difficult questions that Micky didn’t want to ask—and she was pretty sure that Thorn didn’t want to ask them either. But although she didn’t want to ask those burning questions, she didn’t want to deal with the uncertainty of silence. The conflict between the two caused silence to prevail again.
The uncomfortable paused only lasted for a moment, however. Micky stood up from her place on the bench and looked around, a mere attempt to calm her nerves. Finally, she brought herself to meet Thorn’s eyes. “Do you want me to leave?” she asked, motioning towards the door. She prayed that what she meant was clear: she was asking if Thorn wanted her to leave the church, not the city. About that Micky wasn’t sure what she was going to do. It would be hard for her to pack up and leave again, especially since she had already established a friendship with Jordin. How would she explain? Sure, it was raining outside, but she didn’t particularly care anymore. Either way, it was all up in the air, and it was all up to Thorn.

Thorn paid enough attention to notice the small smile as Micky agreed she didn’t expect them to run into each other again. So did that mean she was actually happy about it, even if both of them knew how awkward it also was. Thorn couldn’t lie, she did enjoy being around Micky and they had kissed, there was some feeling there. Some feeling she was trying to force down however. She knew how it would turn out if she didn’t. That wasn’t something she was planning for, the last few years had been confusing and had changed who she was considerably.
Seeing Micky stand up and begin to look around Thorn rose to her feet again on the steps and watched until the girl met her gaze. As Micky asked if she wanted her to leave Thorn shook her head, crossing her arms over her chest. She wouldn’t have her thrown out in that rain, which was just another example of how she’d changed, going from torturing and killing to not even wanting someone out in the rain. “No no, it’s fine, I should probably go back out and get in one of the crypts anyway, don’t want the vicar coming back and trying to get me to confess my sins. That’d be one long conversation.” she gave a small smile, though joking about murder probably wasn’t the best idea she reminded herself. Giving a small shrug to herself she turned round to face the candles behind her and blew out 3 of the larger ones, taking them off the stands and holding them with one arm as she picked her two bags back up. Turning back to look at Micky she just watched her for a moment, wondering where she was staying now. She’d been living with Willow before, hopefully she had her own place here and wasn’t just sleeping where she could. She didn’t ask however, knowing it wasn’t really her business.

Micky watched as Thorn gathered her belongings, slightly confused by the behavior. She hoped Thorn understood that her asking to leave was not because she wanted them to be separated. She had just wanted to know if that was what Thorn wanted. She didn’t want Thorn to feel like she had to leave, not in the least. Stepping forward a few paces, she left the bench area, and now stood in the main aisle. “Isn’t a crypt, I don’t know, a little… typical?” she questioned, smirking slightly. It seemed like the use of a crypt by vampires was such a stereotypical thing. All the vampire movies that Micky had ever seen—which wasn’t that much considering her not so pleasant feelings on the subject—contained montages where the vampire would either lurk out of his crypt or bring his prey back there. Granted that real vampires were nothing like the ones in the movies, other than the whole bloodsucking thing, but Micky still found some humor in the fact that some vampires still lived in crypts. It was so… dirty. She could understand with newborns, living in graves and crypts because they haven’t yet realized that they aren’t in the movies, but with vampires who have existed as such for a significant amount of time, it made no sense.
“I just don’t see you living in a crypt,” she noted. She always pictured Thorn living in, at the very least, an apartment. Thorn had seen Micky and Willow’s home before, but it was never the other way around. Micky realized that she had no idea where Thorn actually lived while they were in London. But this was not London, she reminded herself. This was a new place, a new start, and she really needed to stop thinking about her past. Doing so always seemed to be an issue with her. After all, her life started because she was obsessed about killing vampires, due to what happened with her mom. And then it revolved around that one specific vampire, because of everything after that. Chicago. Boston. New York. And now London. She needed to move beyond all of them, and maybe, just maybe, Cleveland would be the place to do that.
“Although, I shouldn’t really talk. I mean, I’m living in a random burnt out warehouse.” A warehouse seemed to her like the next step up from a crypt, so she couldn’t really pass judgment on Thorn’s choice of a living space. Maybe somewhere down the road Micky would have the opportunity to buy an apartment, but that required working for some cash. Looting off of vampires (who undoubtedly stole from their prey) and winning bets in pool or card games was enough to pay for food and clothes, but not an apartment. Micky wasn’t exactly working-girl material. Besides, the warehouse had a fridge, laundry machine, bathroom, sink, electricity and water, and it was all free because the idiots who ran the town never shut the place down. Apparently it was a warehouse for a Bed Bath and Beyond type of place, and on top of that the owner of the company had used some of the space as a sort of guest house; he would rent out the space for cheep to people who needed it. At least, that was what Jordin, the other girl that lived there, had explained. At least for a little while, it would do.

For a few moments, as Micky came away from the benches and out into the aisle Thorn was still and silent, as if it was taking her a moment to get used to her being that little bit closer. As she spoke however Thorn let out a small laugh, and a smile stayed on her face for a moment. She knew exactly what Micky meant and she agreed. “Yes, typical and you’re right… you wouldn’t usually find me in a crypt.” Though she was a vampire Thorn wasn’t used to slumming it really, it hadn’t happened often, though unless she found a new way of making money she was going to have to. It was surprising how much you could get off victims… and how much Sophia had left her since she thought she was simply someone who needed taking care of. But by now almost all of it had run out and with no more victims there wasn’t exactly anything coming in.
“I’ve become used to the easy life, never really had to go without” she admitted, resting back against the end of one of the benches as she watched Micky, she didn’t like to hear that she was living in an old warehouse, though she kept silent about it. There wasn’t exactly anything she could do about it after all, not that she thought Micky would ever allow it even if she could. “I had an apartment in London but since I don’t really have the money for another and the last time I stayed in a hotel in America everyone had a strange obsession with my accent I don’t have much choice of places to stay.” she explained, though still she knew that a crypt was typical. Typical but safe however, as they let in no sun and there was barely any chance someone would come disturb her through the day while she was sleeping. Well, unless a Slayer decided to come take her out while she was sleeping, though they tended not to have that idea for some reason. “I dunno, maybe I’ll be a bank robber, I once when through a period of stealing from art galleries… though the security is probably better by now no doubt” she gave a shrug and a weak smile, not exactly wanting to think about where money would come from now, maybe she’d just have to get used to no longer having a comfortable lifestyle. “So unless you have a better suggestion I’ll have to take the crypt”
((Thanks! I was thinking of having a little evil Thorn slip back in… though I wasn’t exactly sure how to do it. Any ideas?))

((I’m afraid I don’t have a clue. Sorry! But if I come up with anything I’ll let you know.))
A better suggestion? Truth be told, Micky did not really have any ideas at first. Still completely reluctant to let silence settle, she began to babble, only somewhat aware of what she was doing so. “Well, I would ask you to come to the warehouse and stay there. It isn’t much but it’s better than nothing. Actually it’s kinda like a house inside a warehouse. It has all the stuff someone needs. But I don’t think that’ll go over too well. I mean, Jordin, the girl I’m staying with, is a slayer. She wouldn’t exactly be welcoming.” She paused, finally coming to the realization that she was beginning to ramble and that Thorn probably wouldn’t appreciate it. She offered a small shrug, just to emphasize that she didn’t really know what she was doing or was she was talking about.
As she collected herself again, Micky realized that there were other possible places that were better than crypts and warehouses that Thorn could stay in—at least until she got caught and had to go elsewhere. “You could try to get a house.” Fully aware that she needed to explain more than her simple words, she continued. “I haven’t been here that long but there always seem to be some housing open for sale or some that have been seized by the bank. So you might have a chance of staying in one of those for a little while. It’s gotta be better than a crypt.”
